community murals

Abercynon intergenerational mural was a Lead Creative School project, working with a reception class and the local sheltered accommodation for elderly to produce an interior mural. This was community mapping for 5 year olds, giving as much importance to the trees, train tracks and river that anchored their understanding of place with the personal histories of days-gone-by told over cups of tea and biscuits.

I chose to represent Abercynon with colourful rings, providing a sense of being enveloped, with layers of history of this unique people and place. Simple mark-making represented the human activity, industry, mountains and trees, producing a map of how Abercynon is experienced by its residents, young and old.
